The redevelopment of the Kenwood Towne Centre in 1988 was the spark that ignited the Township's explosion of economic development. The "Towne Centre", as the locals call it, first opened as a retail strip center in 1956, complete with a bowling alley. In 1988 it was converted to an indoor mall and ballooned to 1.1 million square feet. Along with Sycamore Plaza, The Shoppes of Kenwood, the Jos A. Bank Center and the new Kenwood Place, the Kenwood area alone has approximately 3 million square feet of retailers, many upscale and one-of-a-kind, making the Township a premier shopping destination.
In 2006 The Kenwood Towne Centre finished construction on a 100,000 square foot outdoor street-scape which added approximately nine new stores and restaurants, including The only Cheesecake Factory in Greater Cincinnati. The additional commercial space is designed to be strolled both inside and outside of the mall.
